Henry

Henry came to us from a family with a toddler. He was extremely loved and cared for, but became more nervous as the toddler became more mobile. As much as they loved him, they didnt want to see him on edge all the time. He went to a family that is now on their third vizsla from us. He has filled a void in Mike and Judy's hearts and home. Welcome home, Henry! Read their story below.

Henry has been with us just short of four weeks now, and we couldn’t be happier with him. While we have had Vizslas for something like 50 years by now, we have been Vizsla-less for over ten months since Ryleigh died in February 2021 – and the house has felt terribly empty. (I had a hip replacement about midway through that period, and it seemed wise not to have an active dog in the house while I worried about being knocked over in a fit of canine enthusiasm. But now I am healed and it was time.) Luckily for us, Stephanie Fischer and Nancy Tarbox had just taken Henry into Rescue from a lovely family in Massachusetts. Dan brought Henry out to Montauk, and we all took a jeep ride on the beach – and Henry immediately showed us what a wonderful runner he is. Our delight at having Henry come to live with us was immediate, but Henry wasn’t so sure – he spent two full days curled up on our couch, refusing to eat, and acting like an active Vizsla only when we again took rides on the beach. Of course, we understood that he was sad at leaving the people who had been his family for all of his eight years. On the third day he pretty much came out of mourning and has been his polite but active self ever since. He is wonderfully well trained – not only responding to sit, down, stay, etc. but also willing to shake hands and kiss when we ask him to. He gets excited when he sees a deer through the window (we’ve never had nose marks on an upstairs window before) and continues to love the daily run on the beach. He makes us both feel important by worrying about each of us if we leave the house or step out of the jeep. We are enormously happy that he has come to live with us – and he’s learning to make room for us in our bed even if we go to bed later than he does. As time goes on, we hope that Dan and Laura will come to visit him at his new home. Thank you to all.
